Christ in Every Scripture, Christ in Every Experience

Today, as part of our series Christ in Every Scripture, Christ in Every Experience, we look at the deeper meaning of the algum tree in the Word of God.

Algum (almug/ sandalwood)

And also the navy of Hiram which brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir great abundance of almug trees and precious stones. And the king made of the almug trees a support for the house of Jehovah, and for the king’s house, also lyres and harps for singers. No such almug wood has come or been seen to this day. 1Ki 10:11-12

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them. Eph 2:10

Him who overcomes I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he will go out no more. And I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of Heaven from My God, and My new name. Rev 3:12

Symbol of: Pillars, God’s workmanship

The algum or almug tree is a large tree native to India and Ceylon, which reaches a height of 22 m. Its very heavy wood is fine-grained, and black on the outside but ruby red within. It is highly scented and resistant to insects. The wood of this tree is known for its strength, beauty, and long life and was well suited for making musical instruments, cabinets and especially pillars for the Temple.

Fulfilled in Christ

Jesus Christ is the Tree of Life, the Pillar of Life, the Temple of God. As the algum tree was used to make terraces, a walkway, path or stairway, Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) – through Him alone man can be reconciled with the Father. The Church, His Body and House that He builds, is wonderfully great (Matt 16:18).

Applied to You

Dear Brother and Sister, is your life and walk with God highly scented, spreading a Christ-like fragrance wherever you go, like the sandalwood tree? Are you resistent to those pesky little “insects” (worries and cares of the world) who wants to steal you peace, joy and life of abundance in Christ?

You and I as part of His Body is the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Tim 3:15). You and I are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works – God has foreordained it so! Therefore like the algum tree, you and I should be known for our strength, beauty and long life – not in ourselves, but through the Pure and Lovely One dwelling within us!

We have been blueprinted to overcome – to be overcomers in Him, because we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us, and thus we will be like pillars in the temple of God upon whom is written His new name. Like the wood of the algum tree was also used to make musical instruments, you and I have been created for His pleasure, to praise Him with psalteries and harps (Rev 4:11). Let your life be a love song to Holy One…

Let us arise in the power, strength, beauty and long life in Him, overcome and take up our rightful place as pillars in His House!
